The crowd hold their breath, all of them anxious to see how Targus plans to deal with Filibert and his deadly crossbow. Will Targus pull out his own crossbow and duel with the halfling? Targus's target percentage for casting Magic Missile = casting skill (68%) + INT bonus (5%) - spell difficulty (10%) = 63%. Targus rolls ... 54% - success!

Targus's casting skillof 68% makes him equivalent to a 5th level caster. Therefore, as per the spell description, two missiles are fired, each doing 1d6+1 damage. Targus rolls ... 8.

There are oohs and aahs from the crowd as the missiles of magical energy shoot forth from Targus's fingers and strike Filibert squarely in the chest. A small section of the onlookers actually break into a spontaneous round of applause.

There is no "5 foot step" as such in Basic Fantasy. Your options each round are as follows:

1. If you are not engaged in melee combat, you may move up to your full movement distance and then perform an attack (melee, missile, spell). Movement always comes before the action.

2. Or, if you are not engaged in melee combat, you may move up to TWICE your movement distance (i.e. run) but not make an attack.

3. Or, if you ARE engaged in melee, you may move up to HALF your movement distance and then attack.
