Basic Fantasy Questing - Release 3

Release 3 is now available the Showcase. This is a major update following the recent playtest.

The specific updates are as follows:

- The core mechanic of "target percentage = base skill + relevant ability modifier + situational modifiers" is more explicitly defined, both generally and in relation to each specific skill.

- The fact that humans don't get any racial ability skill (saving throw) modifiers, but do get a bonus to experience rolls is more clearly explained.

- The Intuition ability skill has been renamed "Perception". This better reflects the likely application of the skill in practice.

- An optional rule for "opposed skill rolls" has been added (e.g. stealth vs. perception, or strength vs. strength).

- For classless characters, the Open Locks/Remove Traps combined skill has been renamed "Mechanisms". Similarly, the Move Silently/Hide combined skill has been renamed "Stealth".

- The explanation of spell casting for "classless characters" has been significantly expanded and clarified. This includes, as suggested by Woe, the separation of the casting skill into "arcane casting" for Magic-User spells and "divine casting" for Cleric spells.

- For in-play reference, the character sheet has been updated to include information on the type (Cleric or Magic-User) and level of each spell a given character knows.

You can download a copy from the Showcase.

BFQ Release 3 - Character Updates

So, with the release of the latest version of the BFQ supplement there are a few updates to your characters that are needed to bring them into line ...

1. Rename the Intuition ability skill as "Perception".

2. Rename the Open Locks / Remove Traps thief skill as "Mechanisms".

3. Rename the Move Silently / Hide thief skill as "Stealth".

4. The casting skill needs to be split out into "Arcane Casting" for Magic-User spells and "Divine Casting" for Cleric spells:
- Arcane casting starting percentage is INT x 2%.
- Divine casting starting percentage is WIS x 2%.
- Redistribute the additional percentage points that you originally allocated to your casting skill between these two new skills (for Targus that was 38 percentage points, for Marcus it was 40, for Elena it was 36, and for Filibert it was 0.
- Redistribute the casting experience points gained from first playtest to the two new skills (Elena = 1, Filibert = 0, Marcus = 4, Targus = 3).

Hopefully that's clear, but let me know if you have any questions.

Done. With the change to arcane/divine, I also leveled up.

I've deleted Targus, thanks for letting me play.

Elena gains 3 hit points and 4 magic points as a result.

Thanks. With the change in casting, is it ok with you if I swap my wisdom and charisma scores? I'd rather play a obliviously clueless elf than one that lacks basic interpersonal skills.

I kind of liked Elena's social inadequacies, but sure go ahead.

Done.

When I download and open the supplement PDF there isn't any text, just black boxes. It looks like a heavily-redacted document. Pictures are fine though. No problems with the .docx either. I'm on a Mac, if that helps.

How would you handle players who try to get their characters to be good at everything? Will there be skill caps?
