I take it the cleric wasn't able to turn any of the skeletons?
Imagine a 2nd level thief with 6-7 hp using a short sword. His bonus is probably on range not strength so every time he hits, at half damage, he is doing only 1-3 hp damage. If the skeleton has 6 hp that thief will probably have to use 5 or 6 rounds to kill it. If the thief didn't die before killing it he most certainly probably would die if he had to face one of the 2 remaining skeletons that the cleric and fighter hadn't initially engaged.

I wonder if they got caught with all sharp weapons.. that can make for a long fight with Skeletons! And I will say that Pathfinder isn't a very forgiving game either. In the first campaign I played we lost 5 characters. One poor sap had to reroll his twice, and this didn't include the time the whole party wiped on our second encounter where the DM cut us a break and had the NPCs rescue us.

In an earlier post he said the MU went down fast, the thief and fighter had edged weapons but the cleric had a mace. He didn't say if the turn failed (assuming the cleric tried to turn)

Sorry, I forgot to mention the failed turn on the skeletons.
I was wanting to have about 40% chance of fatality in my combats, but I see it's not the kind of game that works that way.
So should I focus more on making interesting encounters than on "balanced" ones?
