If they were fighters, their attack bonus would go up to +2, but thieves don't get that until 3rd level.

BFRPG has minimal changes each level. New HD roll, check Attack Bonus, check Saving Throws, Thief Abilities, number of spells, Turning (if one records such numbers)... about sums it up. Some of the optional classes might have more to deal with... but it is still minimal stuff to worry about.

Yeah, I also have to level up a cleric NPC. I've already done the HP, but now I have to do all the rest before we play again. They just cleared the Kobold lair, but there are still 8 Kobolds loose in the dungeon somewhere. Properly played, I would have to have them get revenge on the boys. They're doing pretty good in battle so far, and getting lucky with my bad rolls. Of course, they're having their share of bad rolls too. One of them rolled a fumble, and shot his brother's character with a crossbow bolt. That wasn't fun for the one that got hit, but they got over it. 2000 is a long time to wait for the fighter to level up. The others will be 500 xp from 3rd level when he goes to 2nd. I hope the payoff is worth it. Specially given the fact that I've been railing against balance on the ENWorld forums lately (yeah, 5E discussions... my curiosity got the best of me). I look forward to seeing how this game plays out over the levels with the boys.

if being a fighter gets to be a problem give the fighter duel wield like in Midieval mans game - if you miss with the good hand you get a shot with your offhand (small weapon) with a -2 penalty

... what if we did a simplified BFRPG for kids?
I know there are lots of "kids' D&D" games out there but none explicitly based on BFRPG...

I would like to see a 'kids' version, or perhaps (probably about equivalent) a quick-start game. Something where one can grab the rules/scenario/pregens and begin play in moments. The best example that I think I ever saw of such is the introductory piece from the Star Frontiers game. That one walked not only players but the GM through some a couple of examples of play.

We have the "Players Essentials" supplement. Perhaps that could be expanded into a (even more) rules light/children's version of BFRPG. Tack "The Old Island Fortress" on to the end of it, with a walk-through and you have an instant, introductory adventure.

You would need something much simpler than the old island fortress. The basic d&d game had the perfect small module, The Haunted Keep, built in at the end. In 3 pages it showed you how to design and stock an 8 room dungeon, organised the stocked rooms with all the details just like a module and provided a map in both plan and profile.

I think a slight rework of the GL0 The haunted tower would work for an introduction module. It was originally setup as an adventure for 1 or more first level characters. The author created this module to run his 6 yr old daughter's character through it but it is not that hard to expand it to be able to include more then one or two characters and it is already geared towards kids. I can't remember where I found it but I think it was somewhere on dragonfoot and it is for classic D&D. Someone would have to get permission from the original author to be allowed to do the rewrite for it to fit into BFRPG.

Hmmm... I think I have that one. I've downloaded all of the adventures on Dragonsfoot. As for the author, I don't think there would be a problem, as Chris is the author.
