Right now, basicfantasy.org costs me about $11.00 per year. Hardly worth worrying about.

That was just an added bonus, not the point. I am sure you have played around with Lulu in the order box to see how much it would cost, books and shipping, for you to buy 50 books, 100 books, 1000 books or anything in between. I know I did with my book and you can find the exact number where each break is for the next reduced price for buying bulk is. They will also cut deals sometimes as well when they are running promos. The difference between me buying my book including shipping as a customer at $17ish (its been several years since i looked) and buying 100 of my own books with shipping at something less than $9 each, means I could buy twice as many books if I knew I had that money in hand already.

If I have to handle the books, I'm not doing it. No matter what it costs, saves, or profits me. I won't make my hobby into a job. I'd have to deal with accounting, and shipping, and customer service. The way we do it now, Lulu.com does all of that, and it suits me fine.

Again, if others wanted to step up to do it, you wouldn't have to worry about all that. Others as in people like Smoot who has put a lot of blood into this game constantly and over a long period of time. He is just the first off the top of my head. I know there are others as well. I am not saying it must be done, but I think you should at least open your mind to the possibility that it might be done.

My mind would be open to the possibility if an actual candidate volunteered.

Don't need the money, not for the name. I have domain names coming out of my ears... what's one more?

If the goal were to raise money, just adding a buck to the cost of the books sold on Lulu would be a very simple way to generate a small amount of cash. (Just saying. I know that's never been the point here.)

If having a boxed starter set was the goal (rather than funding), I would say put the starter book up on Lulu, include a cool box cover that can be printed out, and let people build their own boxes.

We did talk about doing a starter set once before, but it didn't get very far. Mostly because, I think, no one had time to work on it.

Open Source is about scratching your own itch. If you want something, you create it; then you share it, so others who also wanted it can use it, and as it is Open Source, they can even improve it and share the improvements with you.

Many times, someone will start a thread and say "We should do this." Even if many people agree that it is a good idea, it will not happen until someone stops saying "we should do this" and actually does it.

In other words, asking or telling never works to start a project. Sharing is the only thing that will work.
