Mana Magic System

Post Wed Jul 04, 2012 1:25 pm

Okay, I've read through the "Sorcerer" supplement. The Sorcerer seems... under powered to me. However, I think a mana system would help this. The caster draws from the mana in the area, as opposed to just from thin air. That would allow for them to be more powerful in some places, and less in others. I haven't thought this out yet, but reading through the Sorcerer supplement brought it back to my mind.

I had written a mana point system up at one point for 3E. Though I have lost it in the intervening years. If you wanted I could see how much I remembered of it and try to retype it.

It would be nice to at least see what you have, so that it could be discussed. Admittedly, I have nothing but the thought process going on right now.

If I remember it right it was pretty elegant. It kept the top end spells at a limited amount while allowing the repeated casting of many low level spells. I will see what I can do.

Would it use a mana point system, where certain spells cost x amount of mana to cast? Or did you use something altogether different? Also, how would this effect the clerics in this system? Their magic would come directly from their deity, and not from the mana around them. Or maybe the deity grants them a certain amount of natural mana in their body, or in the air around them, or whatever.

Also, would it put the Bard as a sort of spellcaster sub-class? The bard would be using the same mechanics as he tells his story or sings his song, using the mana around him for the effect.

Also, would it make combined classes too powerful? Imagine that Paladin now, who can fight in armor AND cast spells. Or am I missing something?

1-Multiply the amount of spell per day by its related spell level for each spell level possible.
2-Add the results.
3-Note the max level limit for each level.
4-Enjoy!
If the spell points amount seem to large reduce it by a percentage of your choice.

Characters who gets spellcasting later on their class will have a reduce amount of spell points:
A level 2 cleric, a level 9 paladin and a level 1 magic user will have the same amount of spell points.
