New Settings

Post Fri Jun 29, 2012 1:15 pm

I have not worked actively on my own alternate setting (BFRPG Apocalypse) in some time, but it is still very promising.
and I know that there is an impending Cthulhu-esque setting coming down the pipe.

I have too many projects running concurrently that I need to attend to,
but, I am wondering if another such alternate setting might be made for BFRPG by one or more of our forum members? I would certainly give some creative input and commentary whenever I can (and is asked for).

Things I would like to see fully developed (but primarily compatible with BFRPG core rules):

Redwall, Mouseguard, Secret of Nihm, Wind & the Willows, or other such inspired setting where the various animals of the forests are anthromorphic (at least to an extent) and have various adventures (minus any human interaction).

Steampunk / NeoVictorian / Monster-Movie - something like the newer Sherlock Holmes movies, mixed with classic monster movies (frankenstein, werewolf, etc), with a sprinkling of steam tech. Savage worlds has something similar but I would remove any such details of the monsters/foes being part of some great evil mega-organization... more free form. Alternatively this could be a Gangbusters/Monsters hybrid instead (roaring 20's with horror).

Pirates, Swashbucklers, and Voodoo - Pirates of Carribean, perhaps with a little more magical stuff and creatures.

I am sure other ideas are out there for some interesting alt-settings.
Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?

I have had 3 setting ideas recently. Only one of which I am working on.

The first is along the lines of your monster-movie idea. I would classify it as Gothic-adventure, since its more like the old Hammer Horror films than the original gothic stories they are based on. I came up with the idea mostly because I have the old Castle Ravenloft module lying around and I would like a setting to place it in.

The second idea is a lot more fleshed out. Its a blend of dystopian and post-apocalypse settings. My main inspiration were such movies like Escape from New York, Soylent Green, Mad Max, Death Wish and Dirty Harry. Basically the world went through some kind of war and now only certain areas are still inhabited, while the rest of the world has reverted to wilderness. I came up with a number of ideas for the mechanics of the setting but haven't written any down yet.

Then my third setting which I have been somewhat actively working on is much more traditional. Stuff like the Chronicles of Pyrdain and the Hobbit are the main inspirations for it.

I have an East Asian-inspired setting bouncing around in my head that's not really come to fruition yet. Right now it's just a few mental notes on how certain classes are renamed and fit into the world at-large, like how Clerics are called Sohei and use polearms almost exclusively, female cleric spell using magic-users are the more common priests, called Miko, and some notes on what makes a Ninja.

My main setting is all dungeon fantasy all the time, very stereotypical deeundees.
Characters:
Himamura Jin (Night Wizard; Level 6 Great One/Level 1 Caster)
Benjamin d'Aide (BFRPG; level 5 cleric of the virtue of Sacrifice) - recurring hireling turned pseudo-DMPC

Add Asian Inspired to the list I would like to see as well, but done with some differences. Perhaps some Avatar (last airbender) influence?

The Eastern Adventures would be a good test ground for the blended cleric/mu, akin to Smoot's No Clerics. Between the old OA, the new OA, L5R, Avatar, and if you're feeling really wacky, Exalted, there's a lot of fodder.

Don't forget we've got Voidspanners out there. I'm just tossing that out to keep it in mind for any sort of setting list.

Do inverse campaigns count as an alternate setting?

What I am pondering is very (3.0)L5R+Kara-Tur inspired. Right now, tho, it's just a thought experiment about how the classes fit into the various cultural roles. I'm probably going the have to ape an Honor stat or some sort of cultural standing background, as east Asian (particularly Japan) cultures appear to have a stronger segregation between social classes.

A request: As you work this up, suggest that honor be used in regards to character actions, and not be a way to punish players for unfamiliarity with the culture/setting. Warn them until they learn.

Of course, I feel that pretty much any mechanic added should exist to help the players get into the tone of the setting or to add options to enhance the player experience, using a new mechanic for the express purpose of punishing players for deviating from the DM's narrow path annoys me.

... oh my. So, it seems I've started actually writing a Fantasy Japan setting. Not an East-Asian setting, but specifically a Fantasy Japan empire that can be dropped into many other settings.

So whats your opinion (at everyone) of coming up with a very specific set of rules for specific settings and instances. For instance I am seriously considering running a one shot that uses BF as the base but edited to fit the genre and atmosphere of the adventure in question. I am not suggesting that this be done for a long term campaign but for a one shot what do you guys think?
