Not sure what your local retailers might do on this day, but this is
FREE RPG DAY

Get out to your local retailers and demand some free stuff.
Play in a 1-shot game if they are hosting anything fun!

Here is a store locator to help you.

Closest retailer participating for me are both some 100 miles, over mountains. That said, I have 5 copies of the starter kit for BFRPG printed out and will be running my dungeon the Tomb of Ramos (plans on prepping it for release here) at my FLGS tonight (its a Magic store that just happens to have a single rack with D&D4 and PF books).
Characters:
Himamura Jin (Night Wizard; Level 6 Great One/Level 1 Caster)
Benjamin d'Aide (BFRPG; level 5 cleric of the virtue of Sacrifice) - recurring hireling turned pseudo-DMPC

Will be heading out again to let my kids participate in an event at a local shop. They are going to play Marvel Superheros.... 1st edition from the eighties!! Old school super-hero battle royal. Good vs. Evil.

I am a little jealous, because I will likely have to remain out of the game so that my youngest does not get into any trouble while my other 2 children participate.

I got a stack of freebies already, so I will probably just look over some of it while they play. I will try to review some of this free gear over at the RPG Free List site that I run... check my signature.

Took all 4 of my kids to the local game store and had them each pick a different one. Lots of new material to peruse. We picked up the following:
Dungeon Crawl Classics - been looking at this one for awhile, like the old-school feel
Shadowrun/Battletech double feature
Pathfinder - Dawn of the Scarlet Sun
Only War - Eleventh Hour
Castles & Crusades
D&D - Dead in the Eye

Then looking through their discount bin I found a copy of Dragon Warriors. I don't know anything about it but a hardcover book for $5.00 - I'm in. We'll see what it's like.
The problem with doing something really stupid to impress people is that they may just be impressed by how stupid you really are.

BFRPG went over well at my FLGS.

Today was apparently YGO day there, and after the event was over I rounded up seven interested in battling their way through the tomb to lay their hands on the treasures buried with the angel Ramos (well, a fallen angel who redeemed himself, and isn't really dead, but that is a story for a follow up adventure.)
Had to ask the owner to print out two more copies of the starter kit so everyone could have some.

Highlights:
A Dwarf Cleric attaching rope to his throwing hammer so he could pull it back after each attack.

A Human Magic-user actively position himself so he was always behind one of the armored characters.

Halfling Fighter dying from multiple poisonous snake bites because he thought it would be a good idea to take the death adder from the pit and try to use them as a weapons against team of NPC adventurers who were also searching the tomb for treasure.

Human Thief (played by a kid no older than 14 or so) refusing to head towards the dungeon until he's hired at least 3 armed guards - leading to the following choice candidates created from here on my netbook:
  • Grudar, male dwarf man-at-arms; 5 hp; former ironstone miner, armed with a hand axe, leather armor and a shield. He has no other notable possession - including teeth, he has none.
Bowser, a male war dog; 5 hp; he can bite for 2d4 damage; he is a devoted companion, with no notable markings.
Denys, male human man-at-arms; 5 hp; armed with a club and a dagger with leather armor; a former sailor with no notable possessions and is kinda gimpy.
That last one threw me for a loop, as I am Dennis, a former sailor (USN), who has a cane (club) and is kinda gimpy (from breaking my back in the Navy)

Best moment goes to:
In a room full of terracotta warrior statues (three units of warriors, at parade rest, the leader of each unit being a clay living statue), the Halfling Thief (played by a 9 year old girl - youngest of the players) toppled over the clay statues dominoes style to slow the statues' pursuit and get an advantage for the archer Elf Fighter, the magic-user and the sling-using Human Cleric.
Characters:
Himamura Jin (Night Wizard; Level 6 Great One/Level 1 Caster)
Benjamin d'Aide (BFRPG; level 5 cleric of the virtue of Sacrifice) - recurring hireling turned pseudo-DMPC

I had a blast watching the big battle royale that my children participated in (above mentioned 1st edition Marvel Superheroes).

Heroes included, and bear in mind these are 1980's era heroes:
Wolverine
Black Panther
Jean Grey (pre-phoenix)
Beast
Johnny Storm
Wasp (played by my 9yo daughter)
Punisher

against Bad Guys:
Dr. Doom
Mystique (played by Referee's daughter), conveiniently hidden among crowd of regular people until the worst possible moment.
Sabretooth (played by my 7yo son)
Titanium Man (green armor dude)
Pyro (brotherhood of evil mutants guy)

Dr. Doom was especially tough. Good guys had to foil the plot of bad guys who were in the zoo to steal a couple of unique baby animals (an albino dolphin baby and an albino tiger cub). Woo Hoo. It was fun to watch and help out here and there, but I did not play a character due to having my youngest daughter with me (only 4) to keep track of in the store.
