Mystery Style Adventures

Post Thu May 17, 2012 3:17 pm

All right BFRPG folk I have a question that has nothing to do with rules at all. My question is have you ever run any sort of mystery style adventure. I have been thinking about writing a murder mystery adventure I may use in the future and was wondering if anyone had any gems or pearls of wisdom to share.

I've DM'ed "In Nomine Satanis/Magna Veritas" and "WitchCraft" and almost every adventure was taken from a detective/investigate/mystery approach. (my first adventure on a RPG created by myself was that the party needed to investigate the disappearance of a local sage at the same type. some gargoyle.type monster started to attack the village)
My biggest advice is this: Try to narrate from a more descriptive point of view, if there's a villager-eating monster don't say what type of monster it is, even when confronted with the monster describe it, its better when you say "a giant, humanoid figure covered in fur approach at you, you can see its yellow shinning eyes and huge fangs" instead of just say "ok, theres a werewolf, he moves at you to attack".

Always try to give some clues and try to maintain the flow of the game specially when the more combat-oriented players freezes having no idea of what to do next.
Give the players some contact (1 plus charisma mod for ex.) so they can have somebody to ask for help (if the group is one that travels a lot give them some "membership" besides the one assumed by their class).

For the time being this are my suggestions.
Sorry for any misspelling or writing error, I am not a native English speaker
