Small creatures and throwing spears

Post Sat Mar 31, 2012 6:14 pm

I just had a quick question about smallish creatures (like halflings and goblins) and their ability to wield spears. I see as the rules are written that they are able to wield the spear two-handed (like any other medium weapon) my question however relates to their ability to use spears as a ranged weapon. I was just in the middle of converting Into the Wilds when I came across this conundrum. Anyone have any ideas? I would just let them use them as ranged weapons but I sort of wonder what the consensus is on the topic. Thanks ahead of time for any answers. :)

How well could a human knight throw a lance? The comparisons may be similar.

I can see that, it certainly wouldn't be far nor accurate hehe. I think i will just replace their spears with shortbows or something similar maybe handaxes. Thanks for the reply.

I would say halve the range since they are small size or just not worry about since tspears are supposed to be optimized to be thrown those ranges.

example range of a spear
Medium sized creatures Regular range is 10/20/30
Small sized creatures Regular range could be 5/10/15.

I would probably just let them throw spears normally, not really a game changer. Another option would be to assume they are using smaller/lighter spears and reduce damage to a d4.

I think I am just going to let them use spears as normal. Thanks for the ideas.

The Equipment Emporium supplement (cough) added javelins as a light throwing spear - although with better range. Something else to look at as well.

Well the goblins in the module actually use javelins so I think that suggestion might just work the best I am going to go download that now and check it out, thanks for the suggestion. Something about goblins and javelins in Into the Wilds its like they worship the weapon or something, because everyone one of them has at least 4 javelins apiece.
