Megadungeon

Post Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:54 am

Just out of interest, what happened to yesterday's topic about the new megadungeon that was locked and then disappeared? On the face of it, it looked like an interesting Old School product of relevance to readers of our forum.

Yes, it looked very nice indeed. And since it is designed for Labyrith Lord would be very easy to convert with BFRPG.

However, some of our mod ground rules revolve around the fact that the BFRPG site is for BFRPG Materials (and closely related materials) with one caveat... freely shared. The forums are not intended to be a platform for designers to sell their materials, even if quite usable by those of us using BFRPG rules for our games.

For another look, check out the posting made over with our friends at Dragonsfoot.org, which incidentaly is the exact same as what appeared here.

Great looking material... just not the right place for that sort of posting.
Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?

Seems a shame to me ... it looked like the sort of effort that we, as a community, ought to be supporting.

Personally (and it IS a personal opinion), I don't think it reflects very well on Basic Fantasy in the wider Old School community if we're effectively turning our back on this sort of stuff.

Could we not have one dedicated topic where authors of Old School material could announce their work, be it free or paid for?

That would be up to Solomoriah to decide. I would not be against such a section being created, but Chris is the boss. And, there are outlets (such as dragonsfoot) where they are indeed all about all things Old School.

It really isn't about the items beings for other (but related) games, it is more about being commercial products (not free).

I think I might have been a bit milder on the said post if it wouldn't have been the first one he ever posted here. I have read some reviews on the game and it is supposed to be pretty good but still, I would prefer people look at this forum as a resource and not a potential revenue stream.

BFRPG is an open source project. Nothing against LL, but it goes against open source philosophy to sell a commercial product on an open source site. In case you didn't know, open source is a philosophy, or pragmatic methodology, that promotes free redistribution and access to an end product's design and implementation details. In my opinion there would be no problem for someone to post old school style products here as long as they make their product available for free.

Open source, or for profit, if we keep the adverts, they should be in a subforum.

dymondy2k has a good point, but Smoot and Hyway have the right of it. Only properly free products are welcome here. If enough of them turn up, I'll do as Joe suggests and make a separate forum.
