Bit of a wack situation happened at my last dnd session.
My friends were thrown into jail and they were meant to meet this old tabaxi man in the cell but instead they took a really dark turn. The party had a barbarian, a wizard and a cleric.
First the old tabaxi touched the barbarian while saying how useful his strength would be for an escape, the barbarian then broke his fingers.
Second the wizard froze the tabaxis leg, the barbarian and the wizard then both jumped on the frozen leg and snapped it clean off. They then both took turns punching him in the junk.
Finally, while he was writhing in pain, the wizard set him on fire and watched as the old tabaxi slowly died while crying out for the guards to help him.
I think I maybe need new friends.
Ok this is a bit of an extreme example but I'm seeing quite a bit of this kind of stuff of late ,
Has anyone had anything like this happen ever ? In any game they have played
Something I read about 5th ed
Re: Something I read about 5th ed
I don't think this is limited to 5th edition - though the internet and communities like r/dndhorrorstories do make them more widespread. I remember stuff like this from way back in the 90s - both in 2nd Edition groups that were part of my friends group in middle school and high school, as well as in 1st Ed AD&D, and game groups more similar to what BFRPG is meant to replicate from adults in the community.
When I was about 15, I was at a game store called "The Wizard's Tower" in New Hampshire. They basically sold two games - Warhammer and Magic the Gathering. Role playing games like AD&D had some presence, as well as Vampire, and then BattleTech had two small shelves on the second bookshelf about 20' from the door.
I had that location memorized for no particular reason.
Anyway I'm standing about 20' from the front door for no particular reason wondering why the best tabletop miniature scifi war game on Earth was not more popular, when one of the game tables turned into complete chaos. And this dude who had to have been 50 said something like "If I can't kill all of you, there is no point in playing. If we were really lost in a keep - you can bet I'd take you all out." And he stormed off. I can't remember his exact words but I remember thinking it was super cringe.
The rest of the table just sort of looked at each other, shook their heads and went back to gaming. And they weren't using AD&D.
Frankly, bad players exist. Bad DMs too. I don't know if you remember the Worst DM Ever Story (TM) by Anna? It got passed around online waaaaaay back in the day in the early 2000s. *stepped away for some google Fu:* Found it! This is a classic! And there is a rebuttal!

Wow, that's brutal. I don't know how I feel about this. The guy sounds like a dufus and a jerk. On the other hand I feel bad for him. It was a fun read nonetheless. I've seen one worse example from the 2000's. There's a documentary (you can watch it on Youtube if you really want to) called "The Dungeons and Dragons Experience", and there's this super sleazy guy with a really snarky personality and a little earring who takes a very sociopathic and adversarial philosophy to GMing and basically brags about doing horrific things to a female player specifically until she quit the game.Mythos wrote: ↑Sun Feb 14, 2021 12:03 pmWow, that's brutal. Not at all what any of us wants out of gaming, I'd hope. If you do, you're definitely in the wrong place, and I don't feel sorry for saying that, but I know we're all good folks in this community. Far better than "snarky earring dude" from that documentary.
Re: Something I read about 5th ed
For real. I want people to love this game as much as I do - everyone. I think the game is fun. I want other people to have fun too (while admitting that people might not agree that the game is fun). I don't like it when people are so off putting to others. It sucks.

Yeah, I'll watch it. Seems very interesting, thanks.Tazer_The_Yoot wrote: ↑Sun Feb 14, 2021 12:26 pm There's a documentary (you can watch it on Youtube if you really want to) called "The Dungeons and Dragons Experience", and there's this super sleazy guy with a really snarky personality and a little earring who takes a very sociopathic and adversarial philosophy to GMing and basically brags about doing horrific things to a female player specifically until she quit the game.
I'm generally a very agreeable person, and I want everyone to have fun. I think every community has people like Michael or the "earing guy". Perhaps I've been lucky enough to miss them 'till now, but I haven't mate any such people at RPG-related webspaces.
