Again, don't care about real life. In the game, the average of 3d6 is 10.5. So, someone with straight 10s is perfectly average. (Less, actually, since there should be some 11s thrown in.) Seeing a 12 or 13 wouldn't even be noticed. You need to have a 15 (or 16) to have a chance to be noticed. That's just how 3d6 works.
And the character may not be perfect, but who is?
Again, where did I say anything about perfect? In fact, where did I say anything about getting high stats? I just don't want my character to outright suck.

And, again, to each his own.

I do this in a weird way; but, I like it. The players seem to like it, too.

**excerpt from my house rules located at https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/ywCY_N3xddTT**
Ability score matrix
This matrix represents your options for creating your next 20 characters. Yeah. You'll need to hold on to this. You'll be using this often.

Get your 4 six-sided dice. We're going to be rolling a lot. You're going to roll all four and review the results. If you roll a one on any of them, pick that one up and roll it again. If you get another one, do it again. We reroll all ones.

Add up the top three results and record it. Keep doing this until you've written a row of six numbers. Then, start a new row. You'll keep doing this until you have six rows of six values. These results will be your guide for setting the main abilities of Strength, Intelligence, Wisdom, Dexterity, Constitution, and Charisma.

You can use any row or column forwards or backwards. You can even use the diagonals frontward or backwards. But, you can only use that order once. The key here is that you've rolled a whole matrix that will help you make characters for some time. Once you've created twenty characters with this matrix, destroy it and make a new matrix.

Why do I need 20 characters? Shouldn't I have my character plus clones who can be transported in via ICBM?

I like me "stat rolling" the same way I likes me Fantasy Roleplaying. And that is BASIC. I force 3d6 for each state, placed as rolled. So you never know what your PC will be. For "Hexcrawl adventures" style play this doesn't matter much if you get a few dud characters, they'll die off leaving you with your better characters anyway due to the troupe style play we use. Everyone is running a couple PCs at any given time. It's always a good laugh when that Thief with the Int of 3 somehow manages to be the only survivor to escape the dungeon alive after watching his party slowly overtaken one by one as they flee for their lives....... maybe we're a little sadistic now that I think about it :o/

Over the past forty years, I have played way more than 20 characters. This adds some luck and the matrix has them make some choices about the class/race they want to play.

It works. Lots of other ways work, too. Do what you like. But, make sure you have fun.

Good luck!

That was a Paranoia joke :) because you go through characters so fast (typically before the mission briefing is over) you have multiple clones so you don't make new characters as quickly.
