How do you use/what do you do with digital map tiles?

I get the DriveThruRPG newsletter and each week they have a different map to download but I don't have a clue how to use them. Mind you I don't have a clue how to do digital mapping in any shape or form so maybe it's just me.
Are you supposed to cobble them together in GIMP or Photoshop?

I always got the impression you're supposed to print 'em.

Me, I just collect them. Not much need yet, but it's good to be perpared.

Except that they always have 1/2 of it covered up with the logo. Maybe that's why they're free.
