Advice for spell upcasting?

Post Mon Feb 01, 2021 12:25 pm

There some cool low-level spells, like sleep, that would be cool to use on higher-level enemies. Have any of you come up with a balanced way to do upcasting? Just wanted to check before I consider hacking up my own.

I'd do the upcasts as new spells with the limits raised. There are already spells that are arranged this way, where higher-level versions do more; the Cure spells, for example.

If you do as Solo says there should not be any problems as long as the new spell is somewhat balanced, you can introduce "Sleep, Mayor" for example.

Now, if you let casters to upcast a known spell, then things can get out of hand, they learn a level 1 spell with the associated cost and then uses it as a level 5 spell with no extra costs...
Sorry for any misspelling or writing error, I am not a native English speaker

True, upcasting sort of messes with the flow of learning new spells. Thanks for the advice!

For some practical examples of this (aside from the Cure spells mentioned by Solo), check out the Illusionist spell list. They have several examples of this in the current spell list.
