Haunted Castle Adventure

Post Sat Nov 07, 2020 11:16 am

I just finished reading the original RAVENLOFT module and would love to run something like it. My concern is that it is REALLY long. I didn't count all the rooms, but running online once a week it would take months and months to get through.

And I still don't understand the map layouts.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to which BFRPG module might occupy the same niche, but is a more streamlined? Castle by the Sea comes to mind. Any others here or elsewhere that you might know of? Thanks in advance for any direction.

House of Coldarius could be used as the beginning of something like that.

Maybe put a dungeon under it...

Thanks Solo, I just found it in STRONGHOLDS OF SORCERY. Might fit the bill nicely.

AA3 has Reclamation of Castle Devyn by me; there's also my Halls of Finley Manor. 8-)
What are the number of players and their character level(s)?

Thanks, I'll go download AA3 now.

Right now my players are levels 13-15, but I might save this one for the next campaign. It can be tricky to challenge higher level PC's, but I'm trying to hold my own.

Thanks again!

I think Castle D'Angelo in BF3 comes closer to what you're talking about.
Huge map. It's not exactly haunted, but it's under a spell.
It's also really long. Overall, I think it's superior to what inspired it, even though it's not Ravenloft.

I had a good experience running Coldarius, and consider it to be the BF equivalent of Ravenloft (just similar in theme tho, by no means a copy).
I know what you mean re: the complexity of the original Ravenloft maps. Coldarius is much simpler but not as simple as a straight shot tower either.
To create more of a Ravenloft vibe though, I'd flesh out the surrounding area.. a few interesting npcs, more back story about Coldarius, your requisite village of terrified peasants, some possible allies (a cleric, vampire hunter, etc) as well as agents of Coldarius outside his tower.
But that's just me... I think of "Ravenloft" as much more than a dungeon crawl. It's a great way to introduce a powerful enemy into your campaign, and there are lots of run ways to flesh that out.

Thanks Bumblepig. And you're right: the old horror movies needed the townsfolk, etc... to round out the story.
