Campaign for friends

Quick question from newer DM. I'm running a campaign for a few friends of mine. Some very new to table top rpg and some that are more experienced. I am using the Basic fantasy rpg rules for the campaign. How strictly do you stick to some rules. I have a player that wants to play a human figher/magic user but in the rules humans are unable to do this. How often do you bend the rules to allow more creativity?

At the onset, I try to accommodate my players.
If some other guy wants to join later, I'm less inclined to modify things for him.
In your case, I'd let the player discover that he has some elf ancestry on his mother side during the campaign.

Oh ok play into the depth of his character. Thanks for the tip. I think he was wanting to go with a more teifling/tainted character.

Back in the day, I played an Oriental Adventure for my little brother.
He went with an half-ogre sohei.
So much fun...

Two cents worth considering:
“I would like the world to remember me as the guy who really enjoyed playing games and sharing his knowledge and his fun pastimes with everybody else.”
― Gary Gygax
If this is how your games feel, then you're doing it right. Everything else, like rules, can be adjusted to make this happen. If it makes a player happy and doesn't make the other player's unhappy, usually you can just roll with it.

I do like the player's creativity in wanting some type of infernal or other-worldly ancestry, but that begs the question of what that entails in your campaign world. How strictly defined are Law and Chaos, or Good and Evil? What does it mean to be part demon or ifrit? Will this play into how people react to the PC? Would there be visible signs something is "off"? The beautiful thing about Basic Fantasy is that it's simple and vague enough in its setting that this needn't be a big deal, but my interpretation when I run it is that it's a humano-centric world and the average townsfolk are a bit wary of anything more exotic than a Dwarf or Elf, so if someone is displaying something that's "not quite right", either because their eyes are yellow or their mannerisms seem a bit strange, they might have a tougher time winning people over.

Remembering that alignment as such is not actually part of the game...

On that part, I've always been puzzled as the many "evil" spells that were retained when the concept of evil itself was mostly dropped.
Detect Evil,
Dispel Evil,
Protection From Evil,
Are those spells heavily used in your campaign?
Sorry for the sidebar.

I wouldn't say that the concept of evil has dropped from the game, simply because the alignment mechanic isn't included in the rules. In fact, with it gone, spells like 'Detect Evil' could arguably become even more useful than before!
