I use libreoffice and it opens with the spreadsheet part of the program (calc). Is that what you tried to use with the openoffice version?

Never even heard of LibreOffice, I used Open Office.

I thought it printed the lines onto a blank sheet of paper. Seems you need lined paper in the printer.

At least I only get a spreadsheet when it opens with LibreOffice

As noted by its Download entry, it depends on the paper you use.

Page 15: Spells (first paragraph 1, last sentence)

Does this mean it can be done at any time during the adventure?

For example, the magic-user has Read Magic and Light. It's late in the evening and the party have just come across seven goblins guarding a narrow pass through the mountains. A pass the party must traverse in order to carry on.

Assuming she has it in her spellbook, can the magic-user dismiss Light and spend one turn to prepare the Sleep spell?

A MU could dismiss the spell at any point (but that would be irrational and potentially very wasteful to those that are supposed to be really high intelligence people). The rest period just before "preparation" is still necessary.

In practice, the MU probably should dismiss the un-needed spells near the very end of the rest period, then "prepare" fresh spells right afterwords.

Your example would not fly with me, if you mean that the MU drops the one spell for an exchange immediately.

Just before the sentence given by you:

Spells prepared but not used persist from day to day; only those actually cast must be replaced.

This means that if a MU does not cast his full spell allotment, he will start the next day with some spells already prepared.

For all purposes, a dismissed spell counts as an used spell and will require rest before its slot is available again.

If you are seeking a way to allow a more freeform way of casting various spells, try looking at the magic user's option supplement. It has some interesting takes on more liberal spell casting abilities.

Is there a reason why hobgoblins have 1hd in BFRP but 1+1hd in B/X?

Is it because they have 1hd in 3.5? I don't know as I don't have the book.
