Go for the best of both. Over at Dragonsfoot someone mentioned having a projector rigged up aimed at the table, so they could project maps on it.

Maptool certainly has its advantages and has been awesome, but we've discussed it as a group and collectively agreed to return to the table-top. I also think that using maptool has led to a bit of an increased GM workload. As for expensive minis - cardboard heroes. :D I can be cheap-ass with the best of them.

Orpheo.. nothing wrong with a DM on a budget!! I found with Maptools that it definitely requires alot of upfront work on the part of the DM.

and in a world completely out of my budget.. have you seen the gaming table they made that incorporated maptools projecting under a table onto the tabletop. It even had it where the moving the real minis also moved their underlying tokens so it lit up only what they could see with their light source? Thats the way to do it.. if money was no object :)
