Taking the plunge

I have been looking all over town for an old school D&D group to join with no luck. Today I decided to take the plunge and try to start my own group. I have been hesitant because I am not an experienced DM other than a campaign or two back in the 80's and recently DMing occasionally for my kids. I posted a flyer on my FLGS (favorite by the fact it is the only) bulletin board announcing that I was looking for players to go old school with BFRPG. I talked to the clerk and he told me they have 3 D&D encounters groups going and quite a few 3.5 and 4e groups that play there.

Now I am nervous that I may get what I wished for and have 4 or 5 strangers looking to me to entertain them. scary. I plan to run Nights Dark Terror because it is so cool to read and feels like it would be a blast to play.

I haven't had any luck with my recruiting. 19 views and no replies to the forum thread (its not a very active forum) and no calls from the flyer I posted at the store. But some folks who started a meetup to play 3.5 or 4e came around to BFRPG due to the high cost of buying all the books for the modern games. So I don't have to DM and I get to join a group as a player that will be playing every Tuesday night.

You could try posting in some other places... Library, College (other schools), Meetup.com. When it comes to meetup.com, there are often other sorts of 'clubs' which may be seemingly unrelated, but may contain some members who might. For instance, where I am, there is a Board Game Meetup and a Sci-Fi Meetup (literature mostly) which contains members who might be open to gaming.

In CO Springs, we just had a new sort of store open up, "The Yellow King" which I hope to game out of soon. Their business model is that of having a place to play (free), then having snacks/drinks/some game related wares. They dont have a website (yet.. so new) but have a Facebook page: Yellow King Seems like a mix of old-school and new, but I am confident that when I get ready to make an 'open game' happen, that I will be able to gather enough of those folks into BFRPG.
