As the DM the map is up to you. I don't think it matters, but I also don't use figurines and battle maps.
As for understanding the terminology, only the DM really needs to. Just so long as you know what to tell them to roll, they don't need to know all, or even any of the rules.

I would suggest just jumping in the best you can. Somehow back in the day, i managed to muddle through the basics of play with my brothers and friends... And we didn't have any guidance, nor internet, nor even access to game stores better than a "Walden Books" store that sold a few d&d books and modules.... And we were all 10 to 12 years old back then.
Somehow even our simpleton understanding of it and lack of good adventuring skills were still fun. It really is about getting together for fun over "doing things right"!!

When I read over the BF rule set(or the few short times that I flipped through the D&D rules) I found that the way the dice system was set up a little confusing at first. That's why with the Star Trek(I don't know if anybody saw that) thing I posted it is all based on a point system
But I really like the dice system because it has more varity

The rules are only there to give you a foundation for a shared adventure with your players. They aren't there to control the game.
Another thing, as a GM you should never try to beat the players. That is what the campaign world is trying to do. What you do is serve as a referee between the players and the campaign world. You control everything but the players, so there is a temptation to believe it is you against them. If you have a clever trap that is supposed to ensnare the PCs and they come with a way to avoid it, don't force it to ensnare them anyway. They didn't beat you, they beat the trap.

In the rules it said something like this
it lasts for one 3d12 turn
What is a "3d12"turn
I know that 3d12 means that you roll three twelve sided dice and add them together
But how does that translate into a turn???

the sum of the values is the amount of time in turns that it last, so if you rolled 8, 3 and 5 you get 16, so 16 turns is the duration.
1 Turn = 10 minutes
16 turns = 160 minutes

If there's someplace in the core rules where the text
it lasts for one 3d12 turn
actually appears, please tell me where it is so I can fix it, because that just ain't right...
