Alternatives to Backgrounds and Specialties

I like some of the ideas in the Backgrounds and Specialties Supplement, but I'm not 100% fond of the way it's implemented.

I'd like to work on my own type of "Specialties" Supplement, which would be incompatible with the current Backgrounds and Specialties Supplement, but it borrows ideas from it.

I don't want to step on any toes, so I thought I would pose the question...

Does anyone have any issues with me working on customized specialties based off the Backgrounds and Specialties Supplement, but is not an addition to that supplement?

The idea is to create a supplement that has a massive amount of specialties based on class and/or race, allow the player to choose a specialty at level 1 (with some sort of benefit...but extremely minor), and provide 4 or possibly 5 bonuses (as a player progresses) and some penalties involved with the specialty

I have never let the (pre)existence of any concept hold me back.
I produced my own alternate takes on Rangers, Paladins (holy characters), Barbaric Characters, re-touched Monster Races, and currently working on an Alt-Sorcerer (fey-mage). I even re-wrote (but without any mechanical changes) a few classes so that the material presentation was better...

... so basically, go for it! It is all for sharing anyhow. I, for one, like to see different approaches utilized.

It's all Open Game Content. So long as you provide proper credit per the OGL, you're fine. If you want to submit your work, I'll post it on the site.

Not that you need it, but I'm the main author of the backgrounds and specialties supplement and I say go for it!

Any news on this project? I've been thinking about skills & specialties lately as well and I'm wondering what others are doing.
