Basic Fantasy RPG Boxed Set? a.k.a. "Black Box Set"?
Re: Basic Fantasy RPG Boxed Set? a.k.a. "Black Box Set"?
@Koren: That's actually a neat idea, though I would go with another adventure myself. Heck, one could make a starter adventure and just end it with a couple of hooks and bam!
I'm going to have to make a starter box now...

Just crunched some numbers: If we use the paperback versions of the core rules, the Field Guide and Morgansfort, add 4 blank sheets on good stock paper, add a nice cheap dice set and use general craft store material for the box, a box set would cost ~$25 to make. Add a small markup to round out $30.
I would totally pay out $30 for a Black Box BFRPG!

Morgansfort IS basic fantasy. It needs to be in there. These would make great christmas presents for gamer friends and family.

All you have listed seems to be the material cost. Don't forget labor and shipping costs. Someone has to take the order, assemble the inventory, ship the merchandise, handle customer complaints, etc... There is more to it (as Solomoriah could probably tell everyone since he has his own business) then just putting it together.arcbolt21 wrote:Just crunched some numbers: If we use the paperback versions of the core rules, the Field Guide and Morgansfort, add 4 blank sheets on good stock paper, add a nice cheap dice set and use general craft store material for the box, a box set would cost ~$25 to make. Great idea overall, just don't see how it could be done feasibly.

I was gonna say, be prepared to pay at least double the amount to account for labor and shipping
A mass-produced box isn't going to happen. The neatest ones are the one-off creations that impassioned fans make themselves.

Like others have mentioned... not really feasible economically. However, very very cool in the hands-on do-it-yourself sort of way. Personally, I would love to have a nice wooden box, with inner trays and such to hold fancy dice, a few select minis, pencils/nice pens, etc. All this akin to a nice chess or backgammon set that people who love things pay a premium for; an heirloom sort of piece. I don't have it in me to produce such a thing at this time in my life, but one day perhaps.
Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?

Well, that was assuming that there was to be no profit gained from the expenditure. I would personally make around 10 of them at a time for a specific reason - giveaways at Cons. There are a few Cons around where I live and I have plans to run a number of games using BFRPG at them. Get a party with a couple premades then play the adventure. Afterwards hand them all (plus a few onlookers) the Black Boxes. I'd have the website for here on the back plus a small flyer inside for perhaps the next Con I'd be running a game at.
Basically gifts.

Sounds nice. I wasn't even talking about profit but just covering all the expenses but that is moot if you are just looking at doing a very limited amount for Cons and not an actual mass production product.arcbolt21 wrote:Well, that was assuming that there was to be no profit gained from the expenditure. I would say either give them to the con to use for door prizes or toss them up for Con Auctions.

I could do that. Sone of my friends actually organize one if the cons around where I live, could get with them and look into letting them use them for prizes, keeping a few for folks who play in my games.

While I don't think this project is ever going to happen, I do have to disagree that it isn't feasible. Some of the crap that I have seen get funded on kickstarter convinces me that anything is possible.
