Following the existing progression (per core rules) we would get something like this:

Code: Select all

Score Bonus/Penalty
1 -5
2 -4
3 -3
4-5 -2
6-8 -1
9-12 0
13-15 +1
16-17 +2
18 +3
19 +4
20 +5
21 +6
22 +7
23 +8
I think that the progression could be tweaked a bit in this manner (but this changes the core rules a bit, but certainly doable in a house-rules sort of way). It is better at most 'normal' ranges, worse at the extremes.

Code: Select all

Score Bonus/Penalty
1 -5
2 -4
3-4 -3
5-6 -2
7-8 -1
9-12 0
13-14 +1
15-16 +2
17-18 +3
19-20 +4
21-22 +5
23 +6
Anyhow, thoughts? I think the second list changes little of the existing vibe of the game while being a tad more conservative with the upper extremes.
Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?

The second table is more or less what I use.

Yes, and with that little nod of approval from the BBEG of BFRPG, I think I will go with that.

These are the ability adjustments I use. I like the BF Rules with a few added races.

I like the simplicity of one table and/or one sort of modifier to track. If there are mechanics using one or another ability score, then I would mold that mechanic around the basic modifier instead. It is one of the reasons I would not want the AD&D style percentiles on STR; it is easy enough to make tables that continue progressions uniformly.
