I thought It'd make a neat topic to ask "what lead you to BFRPG?". Was it a neat story? Odd stumbling upon? Or maybe someone invited you to play?
I found it while searching for cheapo 3rd ed D20 Books under ten bucks(what I had in my amazon gift card Balance), researched it, Got the PDF while waiting for My book to come in the mail. It became my replacement for 5th ed(Way cheaper, new game)because I was heavily considering 5th ed.

How did you start?
Never stop dreaming, the imagination is the greatest gift we have.
Re: How did you start?
I'd been running B/X for a while, and BFRPG really had that B/X vibe. But it also had the race/class split and 20 levels nicely spaced out.
Right now it is my old school game of choice. I doubt that I will go back to running straight B/X. Plus it is great for online play. All the players can have free copies of the books. One player is even using the barbarian option from one of the supplements.

Re: How did you start?
I'd was looking for online games and I think I must have typed in "pbp rpg" or something like that.
Basic fantasy came up - not right at the top, but I looked through a few options and liked the look of it. I didn't know about the OSR or any of that, at the time. I'd just spent a month or so posting over at WoTC and had gotten the feeling that something had been lost in modern D and D.

Re: How did you start?
IIRC I found the game and the forum via some free rpg pages, I was searching for some easy to use and easy to alter system and I liked BFRPG, specially coming from lots of OSR games that didn't have to offer anything new or interesting.
Then I enter the forum and found some amazing people in here (compared to some other forums where I've stayed for very little to no time).

Re: How did you start?
I thought there must be a free fantasy RPG out there which I can grab to see if the kids like RPGs at all. I was surprised that there were several well written works to download. It was BFRPG I decided to spend some time with (really read through); I think it was the "basic" approach together with this community that settled it for me.
