I have a Druid in one of the PbP games I'm in with a ferret - it has worked great a few times to get through small openings and scout areas for the party - in one case, it squeezed through an arrow slit in a keep that was filled with soldiers waiting to ambush the party. The 'Speak with Animals' spell of clerics or druids works nicely with pets in this regard.

Nice blog post. I always like playing druids. The thing I dig about basic D&D is if you want to allow a character to have a companion or pet, then could just pick the animal from the monster list and there you go. No crazy Pathfinder-like animal mind-link stuff or special rules for animal advancement feats and combos. Regards.

Cats are epic. I would be super nice to it to make sure it doesn't run away.

I can see the DM saying the cat wanders off, only to reappear later in the game as a diversion.

LOL I could totally see this happening... Or the DM pretty much running it the way he feels like since cats don't listen for crap anyways...

One of my players is playing a half-ogre. He got a really good reaction roll from a sabretooth kitten in SG1 or SG2, I forget, and now it's his pet. Only critter in the group that eats as expensively as the half-ogre... takes a lot of meat.
