"Real World" Campaign Settings

I've been fiddling with ideas for running a classical era greek campaign using bfrpg, and browsing over this thread on asian style campaigns got me thinking.
TSR, in the AD&D historical sourcebooks (the green books for 2e), took the approach of stripping down the AD&D game
to try and fit the setting, taking away most arcane magic and severely limiting divine magic. The other option I see is just tweaking the material to fit the 'flavor' of the setting, so we're playing bfrpg in a pseudo-greek setting, not stripping out half the core classes.
Which approach do people prefer? I'm more inclined toward the second option, it seems more fun to me, and also makes any material I might create and share useful in a standard bfrpg game that just wants to borrow some of the monsters or magic.
