Question about combination classes

Post by jellyfish806 »

How is experience dealt with for combination class characters? Is it split equally between the multiple classes? Nothing in the rule seems to address this but please point out the section that does if I am wrong. Thanks!

The character must gain the combined experience of both classes to reach the new levels as it says on the Combination Class segment.

So, a character needing 2000XP and 2500Xp for each classes must gain 4500XP for the second level and so on.

@Dimirag - 4500 XP will only make the character second level as a Fighter, not as Magic-User. The character would need a total of 5000 XP to make second level in both classes.

2.000 exp points makes a fighter 2nd level
2.500 exp points makes a magic user 2nd level

As per the core rules regarding combination classes "must gain experience equal to the combined requirements of both base classes to advance in levels"

This means that a fighter/magic user must gain the combined exp amounts of each levels. 2.000 + 2.500 is 4.500 exp points to reach second level in both classes.

The classes always level together (at the same time). One acquires 4500 xp and then both classes can become 2nd level at the same time. There is no f3/mu2 (or any other inequality) splits in this method.
Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?

My apologies. I had read that and my interpretation had been very different. Thank you for the correction.

Actually, with the example the text made sense with it. My interpretation was probably biased with how things were handled with multi-classing in 1st edition. So, to answer your question, perhaps an example, such as what Dimirag did, or you can just chalk it up to preconceptions on my part.
