So, combat... still confused here...

If I am within 5 feet I can attack... (not counting range for missile attacks)

I simply roll my d20 and add my attack Bonus (+1 for lvl 1) and add possible strength bonus. If that modified number equals or exceeds the AC of the monster I hit...

Then I roll for damage. I get to add strength bonus again?

Yes, exactly, if you're using a melee weapon you add your Strength bonus to both rolls. Ranged weapons only get the bonus under very limited conditions (basically thrown weapons only).

Movement... is diagonal movement allowed? Using a square grid... I also don't really understand how turning works...

what do people use? Hex or squares?

I use theater of the mind. When I used to use squares I counted every two squares moved diagonally as three squares total.

don't worry about turning unless you are flying or in a boat. People can turn on a dime . most times you use squares indoors and hex outdoors, but it doesn't really matter which. yes you can move diagonally. Don't think of this as a chess board. Think of it as playing cowboys and indians with your buddies and using some simple rules to know who drew first and who hit the other. nothing has to be precise. Just imagine the scene and tell people what they see.

Some people use miniatures without a grid, and then use a ruler to measure movement, where an inch is usually 5 or 10 feet.

We make every second diagonal step count double. Works pretty well.

I think it's great that you're playing with your wife and kids -- sounds like good parenting to me!

I swing at monster.. and he defends.. what do we roll ? is there mods?

If I end up hitting the monster I roll against its Armor number? is there mods?

If I make it past the armor I roll my damage number for the weapon/spell/missile I used? is there mods?
There's a step-by-step here which may help:

When I click on the roll20 link it takes me to a link which says "Not Authorized". Are the pick up games no longer being held?

Thanks!
Hywaywolf wrote:if you can you should show up tonight on roll20 for the BFRPG pick up games. you could learn 10 times as much in a 1/4 of the time by actually seeing it in action. Heck someone might just take you aside and give you one on one instruction.
