... and it was great. The third player wasn't able to make it, which was unfortunate, but we trooped on.
The main combat for the evening - the PCs attempting to counter-ambush (as it turned out) a small scouting party of gnolls and hyenas. The two PCs lived - barely; one went down and the other was with a few HP of the same (tho', technically, aren't all 1st level PCs within a few HPs of going down ... ).
They lost all 3 of their accompanying guardsmen, including Filip. Alas, Filip the bowman who they sent atop the bald hill to keep an eye on things. He was eaten - well, mauled really - by a hyena.
Which spawned the best Old School moment (to me) of the evening ... as the party finished their ambush preparations, most smugly:
Them: "Where's Filip?"
Me: "Good question. Weren't you watching him?"
Them: "Oh no!"
They then fanned out just in time to catch the charging, sneaking gnolls who were going for a small pincer movement.
Great fun was had by all, along with a nice selection of ales and single malt and fine cheeses.
