Something similar actually happened in the very first campaign I ever ran.

One of my favorite stories to tell is how our wizard with no spells remaining convinced a group of 1st level bandits that he would turn them into newts if they didn't do what he told them to do.

Another time when we were raiding a city sublevels we found ourselves entangled in a three way fight between us and two other groups. We opened a door and surprised a 4 or 5 bandits preparing a barricade in front of the opening on the other side of the room (they were on our side of the room). One player had his PC run in and start helping with building the barricade and telling them we were their reinforcements. When the surprise round wore off the bad guys looked skeptical but went with it rather than face a fight from both sides. when we were attacked from the other side, they ran out the door we came in.

Sounds like he pulled off a "Raistlin" maneuver there. :)

Ya, the dragon lance books were awesome. I have only read the core books but I have the next two cycles. It really surprised me how dark it was it.

I agree that there are a lot of situations where if role played correctly no rule is needed but sometimes a system in place to go back and fourth or when the characters are trying to convince someone of something that is against their job, morals, or even court trial.

Ya, so here is the basic idea from what I remember and just stuff I am making up. So basically thats use my example of a thief trying to talk his way past a guard. The GM decides if the situation is going to be best out of 3 or best out of 5 rounds. The player and the GM each takes turns role playing and whoever goes first is just decided during the normal course of the interaction. After each player takes a "turn" now a turn could be a couple back fourths in the conversation or whatever the DM seems appropriate. Then the DM decides on a bonus each side with get on the roll to decide who won. I would do this on a scale of -10 to +10. Usually most interactions would stay in the positive range unless one side really put their food in their mouth.

The roll would look like;

1d20 + CHAR Mod + Situational Modifier

Then the DM would secretly record who one the roll then the next "round" would start and so on and so fourth. Then, when the winner is decided the DM would move the story along in that direction.
