Hexes generally offer more "realistic" movement if you go by the 3.5 rule of “every other square counts double” rule for diagonal movement since every side of the hex is equal distance from one another. But when using hexes while designing a dungeon you will be using a lot of half hexes for hallways and such.

This link to the srd explains it pretty well, http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/adven ... exGrid.htm.

One has 4 sides the other has 6

It looks and works differently on the map, squares are like a chess board, hexes are like a beehive.

Squares allows for one to one combat and straight movement, hexes don't.

Hexes allows to be surrounded by up to 6 opponents while squares allows up to 8 if using diagonal squares or up to 4 otherwise.

As an old "In the Labyrinth" player I say hexes every time. Yes there is a bit of hassle with the half hexes, but they give you facing. You have forward, shield side, flank and rear.

Depends on how involved your combats are
