Converting from 1E - want to play ToEE in BFRPG
Converting from 1E - want to play ToEE in BFRPG
Hello,
I've been a regular player of 3.5 for a few years now and I've decided I want to try running a game with a more "old school" system. What I'd like to do is run a game with some of the classic modules created for 1E that I was too late to the scene to get a chance to play through. Mostly ToEE, which I've heard so much about. I also have players who either have no experience playing pre-3E or RPG games in general and so I've chosen BFRPG as the most likely candidate for system to use due to ease of learning while still retaining an old D&D feel. My question is how to go about converting ToEE or other 1E modules to be compatible with BFRPG? What specific changes need to be made in order to keep the original feel of the module?

Personally, I would not go through the bother of conversion directly. The statistics used are so "in-line" with each other, that the effort to tweak the little bits to match properly does not measure up against the results of such a "conversion effort". Now you may need to wing it a bit for things that appear in 1e that are not part of the core rules of BFRPG such as Rangers, Paladins, etc., but in many cases there already is a BFRPG near-equivalent that can be utilized if absolutely necessary... again in my mind, I would just use the rules/stats/info in the module without change.
It might seem daunting to think this way, but I can assure you that even in the eighties when I was playing 1e primarily, I would use ad&d, 2e, basic stuff, and even third party stuff all rather interchangeably without regard for the fiddly bits that are different... and BFRPG is essentially the B/X version of the game with certain small changes and term-tweaks, the OGL being used to make things nice and legal. There was no noticeable effect of such incongruities on our games.

Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?

Ah Temple of Elemental Evil..... love it! You can run it with very few conversions. Convert THAC0 to Attack Bonus using the monsters hit dice, convert AC by taking the AC of the monster and subtracting 20 (so a 4 HD monster with a THAC0 of ?? and AC of 7 would have an attack bonus of 4 and an AC of 13, if I recall correctly) I'm currently running The Ruins if Undermountain under BFRPG rules and it was easy to "convert".
Oypeen- 30/30 Hp AC 24
Rykken- 24/24 Hp AC 20
Hermia- 39/39 Hp AC 18/20
Giovanni-40/40 Hp AC 22
Ravoneth-35/35 Hp AC 18
Maephina-30/30 Hp AC 16/18

Re: Converting from 1E - want to play ToEE in BFRPG
Just need to account for the change in AC descending vs ascending and the THAC0 table. Roughly 1e is 20 - AC(1e) = AC (bf). And then just use the AB table from Basic Fantasy. There just isn't enough difference between the two to justify trying to convert every monster before hand. And inconsistancies will work out in play. Or you can search the forum for nay other opinions on this. Here is a link to the latest similar question that might help.

So sounds like the only thing I need to do is convert DAC to AAC. Easy enough! Thanks for the help! Unrelated question: is there a version of the PDF with bookmarks? It's a little difficult navigating around the book without them.

I just do a word search for what I am looking for.

I've actually already did this, but I raised the adventure to fit a party of higher level adventurers.. Its really not that hard and you'll find what you need between the core book and the field guide.

I will see if I can find a copy with bookmarks online today.

I quickly put in some bookmarks for the PDF of 2E. Is anyone interested and where should I upload the PDF if they are?
