Re: Customizing the Thief

I think something like those Lock 'qualities' would be ideal for what Solo is doing with the supplement. Perhaps he can change the idea to be a set of modifiers that might get applied to any Thief skill. Seems right in line with his initial plan of a "modifier supplement".

Solomoriah, while you are at it, I think the 'optional' progression rules can be added to your supplement. Redundant perhaps, but having a supplement that covers all the various 'optional rules' for thieves would be ideal - rather than referencing back and forth.

Agreed on the "Lock and Trap" qualities.

As suggested by Hywaywolf I'm cross-posting from DF, this somehow covers parts of Solomoriah's intended Thief supplement

Armors: Thieves may use any kind of armor or shield, but wearing such things affect their chances of success in using Thief Abilities (Open Locks...).

wearing no armor imparts a +10% bonus
wearing leather does not affect Thief abilities in any way
wearing chain imparts a - 20 % penalty
wearing plate imparts a - 40 % penalty
wearing a shield imparts a cumulative - 10 % penalty.

Ability Scores: A thief's ability scores affect its success chances as each Thief ability is governed by an ability score, add to each Thief ability the dominant ability score modifier times five (-15 to +15 but usually +0).

Open Locks, Pick Pockets, Move Silently: Dexterity
Remove Traps, Hide: Intelligence
Listen: Wisdom
Climb: Strength

Sneak Attack: At 9th level the damage inflicted is tripled.

I'll be adding the modifiers table for Thief Race soon. Also, I can understand why thieves in BFRPG do not get "Read Languages" but maybe the ability of using MU scrolls (or wands but not staffs) at 10th level would be a nice touch IMHO.
Best regards

nice ideas. I am sure Solo will look these over as he develops the 'official' version of the 'optional' rules. 8-)

"Look them over?" Pshaw. Artikid has hit the nail on the head... why should I reinvent his wheel?

Artikid, I must admit, I've forgotten your real name. That is, I'm sure I know it, but I've mentally lost the connection between the handle and the name... :D So if you'll PM me the proper attribution (or just post it here), I'll edit your information above into a proper supplement.

Very nice illustrations :!: . If you get bitten by the art-bug again, take a look at the Monster Supplement thread over at the Dragonsfoot Workshop forum. Plenty of critters to choose from.
