Okay, this gives me a few things to think about. I'll try and have a second draft up this evening.

Okay, new draft is up. Smoot, I liked your suggested spells, and there was one from LM I was sorely tempted to add, but I wanted to keep the spell table to a dice-friendly number, and I also wanted to keep the number of spells at each level symmetrical. Blame my (probably otherwise nonexistent) OCD.

Edit: That isn't to say I won't add some or all of those. Just... not yet.

Hey LL
I like this

"can research recipes in the same way as spells. The ingredients in a brew must be very fresh, so brews lose their effectiveness after a number of days equal to the witch's level plus one."

I like the way you solved this. A really powerful witches brew will last a little longer.
I would suggest you remove the word ingredients, as it make (to me) sound like the ingredients themselves need to be fresh. I think some should be, but some ingredients could be stored for long period of time. I really like the disguise spell.

You mentioned looking at the Druid Supplement... all the druid spells (excepting the new ones you made) are in the Libram (it is basically a one-stop-shop for the spells - only ones not added were the Pyromancer ones).

I think the potions ought to be sorted into two tables, one table for really low-level effects, and another table for stronger magicks.

Another spell that needs representation:
Mirror Mirror on the Wall - answers questions like commune. I guess alternatively this could be a magic item.
Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?

I'd thought of the mirror thing as an item, yeah. I might end up going with it though.

I'm extremely loth to introduce any more complexity into the witch's item creation than I already have-- almost to the point that I'm considering coming up with something else entirely for the next draft.

I just keep throwing out the ideas that pop in my head... not all are viable. not all mesh with what others have in mind. not all need be even considered. Just ideas that may give rise to other ideas, other lines of thought, or just to get folks debating things (all providing interesting insights).

That all said, I am liking how this is evolving. FYI - I had thought to write up a "witch" sort of class; there are a few threads on the topic:

...Okay, yeah, for draft 3 I'm gonna try something a little different, ditch the brew but switch to a Magic-User progression-- but I'll keep draft 2 up as well just in case.

I believe using the MU spell progression it's an improvement after all (at least to me) a Witch its a MU subclass.

Maybe I should give them earlier-than-normal access to potion making. What do you think, does that play merry hell with anything?

I read both versions and while I like the second one better it still reads more like a MU with some additional stuff tacked on. The third version reads just like a MU with different spells, imho but I'm not an expert or anything.

When I first heard of this class, I pictured it creating the potions to be used in place of spells. That the spellbook was it's recipe book. Instead of casting a sleep spell, the witch had a potion of slumber that it would throw at the enemy and when the container shattered it release a cloud of foggy gas that put the enemy asleep, etc.. Maybe I'm picturing an alchemist more then a witch.

Maybe them having some casting spells is good also. I remember the evil witches from sleeping beauty and snow white casting spells but also using potions that mimic the spells.
