You know I have always been a fan of morlocks. Maybe separate them from cavemen? Morlocks always truck me more as a degenerate tech savvy race, you know they have knowledge long forgotten by the surface but they have twisted it to some horrible end. While cavemen were more of the re-evolved surface dwellers.

Morlocks might be used in more mundane ways too, so details with their use of some tech is probably going to go in information for a particular region. Aside from such variations, they seem functionally the same race at their core. All mutes/morlocks are just human types that have taken some backward steps in their development becoming equivalent to cavemen that I drew the stats from.

Having devolved creatures using some tech here and there is pretty cool for a scenario.

This project has got me watching my dvd set (originals) as well as the new movies for inspiration. The whole Planet of the Apes mileu makes great inspiration for a game.

The other race idea I hope to be able to fold into the game is a little off that track... I have always liked the Secret of Nihm and the idea of smart rats. So I am thinking of the same experiments in intelligence for those rats, just fast forward those thousands of years and they have developed into something about halfling or dwarf size (needing something that fills that void of small race).

Thoughts? Dorky? or something to work with? Other ideas for another race group?

I don't think its dorky at all. I would count the secret of Nimh among many different inspirations. I would honestly add stuff in like Portal (both the original and sequel), that whole series would be great inspiration for a mega-dungeon. Then you have fantasy-apocalyptic like Dragonlance, or the Dark Crystal. Sources are varied and wild and thats what makes it great.

You know, I'm probably not the most unbiased source for rat-related playables...

You could probably port over most of the Beast-races (caneids, ratlings, anubians, wemics, gnolls, lizardfolk, etc) to fill in some options. Heh, I've got a box full of After the Bomb stuff for more uplift mutation hijinx.

While you're on after the end Fantasy sources, I suppose we shouldn't leave out the Shannara... or Wizards. Yeah...

I feel the need to write a sidebar of fantasy vs. realism in post-apocalyptic settings.

Most of the stock fantasy creatures will be available, only with efforts to give them facelifts descriptively and to mix and mash up their origins. A number of them will be described as mutations, others as genetic monstrosities (think Jurassic Park geneticists doing much more like dragons chimeras and more, and some Cthulhu-ish results of dimensional leaks. I will be hoping that I can get the vibe across of weirder alien-ish versions of the standard fantasy fare, mostly with their stats intact .

Of course there is room for a number of new monsters to be developed!

Robots!

Ahem

So any sort of rules for firearms? I have done a lot of work in that area if you are interested in a simply system for such weapons.

Robots will be in some remote settings, but overall I am advancing the overall setting so far in the future that most vestiges of tech are gone (aside from that specifically needed for a gm's plot). See tv show called something like "after people". After a couple thousand years, most stuff would be gone. Not even concrete or steel girders would last, much less small electronics that are not protected in some manner.

Remnants of tech will be deliberate elements that have a story and reason to exist. Like 1E artifacts.

That said, yes. I plan on killer robots, android race, or more from inspirations like gamma world.

Heck they could be robots from space. Like from the moon, man.
