Mapping Morgansfort (Old School Style)

Post Sat Aug 17, 2019 11:18 pm

I am working on my Westernlands Campaign and part of that is mapping out the building interiors for Morgansfort. I decided to do it in the Old School blue and white format.
So here are my maps.

Please if you have any suggestions or comments just toss em out there.
I am doing up a write up for each building with NPC stats and all, but for right now we shall just stick to the maps.

This is Residence #9
In the "Official" Morgansfort it has a secret gambling hall and speakeasy in the cellar. But given the size of Morgansfort, an operation like that would not remain secret for very long, so I turned this building into a vacant apartment. The last owner was a thief/smuggler who conned his way into an expedition to the Old Island Fortress...from which he never returned.
So the Baron has offered it for rent (20gp a month).
This would make a great starting base for the characters.

Note: There is a secret door that leads to the Warehouse #12 next door. It is well hidden, but eventually the characters will find it and do with it what they will.

This is Warehouse #12.
It is used to store goods that are brought into the Fort by merchants and or residents.
There is a small office/bunk room for the clerks and workers as well as an upper loft that is used for additional storage.

Note: No one in the warehouse knows of the secret door leading from #9 next door. From this side it is extremely difficult to detect. The thief/smuggler who made it was a true master of the art.

This is the Herbalist #7.
This little building houses the Herbalist and her daughter. They both sleep upstairs in the attic.
The whole building smells strongly of herbs and drying plants and is kept very warm (even during the summer months) due to both the rooms fireplace and the proximity of the Trader's fireplace as well. The curtain separates their living area from the "sales floor". The carpet on the floor is of an intricate design (purchased from a merchant many years ago) that gives the impression of magical influences, an impression that the Herbalist does nothing to dispel. The carpet hides the cellar trapdoor.
The cellar is cold, damp and dark...perfect for growing the many mushrooms and fungi that the Herbalist uses to make potions and salves.

This is Residence #8 (Stableman).
Here live the Stableman and his sons. As per the description in the Morgansfort book, they are a messy lot. They all sleep upstairs, with one always sleeping in the stable caring for the animals (the duty rotates, but rarely is it ever the father).

This is the Traders #5.
This building contains nearly anything that the characters would want in terms of equipment.
He will purchase used equipment for one third of the new price (then sell it for half new).
The trader and his wife and children live in the spacious apartment above the sales floor.

Note: What is kept in the secret room in the cellar? Could it be treasure, a secret Cult of Shaitah, or perhaps the Trader does not even know it is there?

"The Toothless Dragon" Tavern #13.
This little hotspot of activity is the best tavern in the Fort. It is actually the only tavern in the Fort.
The small tavern serves the Fort well, allowing soldiers and civilians to blow off some steam while keeping the discipline necessary to run a frontier fort. The Tavern keepers family sleeps upstairs (his daughter sleeps in the parents room, while the serving girls sleep in the open loft area.
There is also a private room that they can rent out to anyone willing to pay (although coming and going hours is limited to when they open or close the Tavern).

The Bank #4.
This building houses the secure vaults of The Guild. A sort of clearing house for all the guilds that normally exist. They also act as the defacto bank/money changer for the Fort.
The Guild Master and the clerk sleeps on the second floor in their own private apartments.
Coins are kept in separate vaults (all locked and trapped).
No one except the Guild Master and Clerk are allowed downstairs.
Both day and night there is an armed and armored guard on the premises.

Stables #3
The stables are, well the stables. They keep all the misc animals for the civilians of the Fort. Day or night one of the Stableman's boys will always be here (sleeping most of the time).
The upstairs beds and rooms are reserved for soldiers who arrive on patrol from Slateholm about once every two weeks (but the Stableman is not above renting out a bed or room for a night (5sp) if he knows the patrols are not due).

These are great and I really appreciate what you have done/are doing here. I looked at the main map and wondered what the layout is inside those properties.

Minor nitpick though. I believe it should be one square = five feet (plural). But I think you realised this too as your latest map puts it as five feet.

Anyway, keep up the good work. Looking forward to seeing all the buildings mapped. 😀
