I was thinking of using something similar in my current game.

Right guys, so far I've given it a lot of thought and I have concluded that It would be best to split the class into two. Giving one loads of animal ability's and features. and the other with access to spells and a progression between a druid and a jester.
Also me and my GM have talked and I have taken the opinions of some other friends and associates and have decided that the companion should also be under the control of the player unless your GM wishes it to be otherwise.
The supplement draft will come out tonight

I would let the player control the animal. It's just simpler.

While you did insist on it being controlled by the player, I still think my point holds about the animal not being able to fully comprehend commands instead just the general jist. For example the player goes:
"I want wolfy to move into the door way then attack the goblin holding the bow and I'll attack the one with the sword"
The GM then goes: "Okay wolfy charges into the room but just starts mauling the nearest goblin, that being the one with the sword."

Definitely what I would do, just to make my players realize that they don't have complete control over their companion.

Also another point, if you decide to play as another character should you be able to wait until higher levels and switch back to that character. For example: Jim plays a M-U from level 1-2. He decides he want to play a fighter. At level 9 he decided that his fighter will go off and his magic user (now also level 9) could now be played as. Is this right, personally I think not. I think that if a player character that retires should be encompassed as an NPC in the campaign. You shouldn't be allowed to regain control back.

of course the player should know that it was going to do this because of the telepathy thing. but generally i get your point. also this should happen less and less often as they level up. as, with the latest version starting with four intelligence by level 10 it has eight and by level 20 twelve.

And one more thing, the Soul-bound (changed the name what do you think?) would not attack different enemy's because of the severe minuses they suffer (no AB or strength modifiers and a -2) .

Back on track

.
I've split it into to types, Soul-Binder a more magically inclined version who benefit much less from the animalistic abilities and the soul bound who is more focused on the animal abilities and gets spells as a paladin.
