There is a Sage quasi-class,
perhaps pull from both Priest supplement and that quasi-class to achieve what you are going for.

Perhaps name like Scholar or Theologian

Correct. The d6 HD limitation is a factor of Race (Elves and Halfings). We have discussed this with regards to how the combo-classes work as well. The d6 for Fighter/MU is actually a function of these more delicate races (Elf or Gnome).
