Re: Battle mats

I just use blu-tak to stick rolled maps to the table and it works fine.

Re: Diagonal squares and distance

I always say you can move diagonally at the same cost. It's a goose and gander thing. If you can do it, the baddies can as well.

Then again, I often use 5' squares (ducks for cover) so maybe I might rethink with 10 footers.

Re: noob questions about monsters

If you are going to roll, do it beforehand. If you are doing it on the fly, assign standard values (5 for an 8-sided die, for example).

In my experience, the thing you want to avoid is setting up the ogre as the BBEG and then rolling the lamest hp ever.

Re: Stat arrays

We're planning to use a variant of 6 x 3d6 where you roll a 3d6, pick which stat to assign it to, roll another, etc. until you've filled every slot. Kind of a nice middle ground between 3d6 straight down and 3d6 arrange to taste, where you get a little mini-game of "do I want that 14 in str, or hol...

Re: Solo campaigns?

I was curious about the definition of "solo" as well. In my experience games with one player (with a few characters) and the GM playing a few retainers can be excellent. Much easier to organise, and the player really feels like it is their story. It is definitely not the same as with a group, but it...

Re: Question about items/potions

First time a character has to test a potion - fun. Tenth time - getting a bit dull now? I like to have some potions clearly labelled. Wizard potions designed for use in tight situations might have "Invisibility" engraved on the bottle in Old Archaic, or a particular religion's Clerical healing potio...

The Ballyman Awaits

Why not U.S. Amazon? To not be available via that or even Kindle is fairly inconvenient TBH. I understand if you gotta play by your publisher's rules, but it's strange to be available via Amazon in one country and not another... It seems you can get it US Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Ballyman-Wai...

Re: Any tips for overland travel gameplay?

I've had some success in various games using an exploration point system. For BF, the slowest party move rate was 30, meaning a possible maximum of 18 miles a day on normal terrain. Each hex was 3x3 miles. The party got 6 exploration points a day, each representing about 2 hours of activity, meaning...

Re: A Comment on the "Companion"/Advanced Question

And how can we help players and GMs organize all these adds for ease of access in campaigns? I'd frame the question as "how do we encourage new players and GMs to think about what kind of supplements they want to use, before they go looking?" It's tricky because there is no accounting for taste and...
