Re: Genesis of the cleric class

Interesting point of view Old Crank, and welcome to the forum. I wonder, why is it that you don't allow PC's to be dark clerics? Dice, the trade off between attacking skills and weapon restrictions is an interesting house rule as well, thanks for that. I think the both of you have house ruled the cl...

Re: Genesis of the cleric class

The creation in response to vampires a la Van Helsing is an interesting anecdote. Does this exist in writing, maybe from an interview? I saw this quick note on wikipedia: The cleric is largely inspired by folklore of the medieval cleric of Templar. Like the Templars described in White's The Once and...

Genesis of the cleric class

I have a few discussion points about clerics and paladins. In another thread we are talking about magic users and whether or not they can transcribe spells from a scroll into a spell book. What would you guys say about Clerical "prayer" books? I think the idea that all clerics of various g...

Re: Magic-Users and Scrolls

If I could offer my layman's perspective, I think a combination of research (time) and materials would be appropriate. The reason being, if we didn't have this balance, you could just create enough scrolls to fill your bag of holding, making for a very over-powered magic user. (This is a big revelat...

Re: Thank You

Earlier when someone asked for beginning GM advice, I pointed them towards some game footage including one of the grognard patriarchs. ButI think in this case a little light humor is in order: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLnjNNeI018 In his rant, he equates D&D (and all of RPG's in general) as...

Re: RPG books to give away

chiisu, you've definitely helped me out a lot! The 1e AD&D is one part nostalgia, one part inspiration. I've already been poking around in the books, and it's a great peek into Sir Gygax's imagination. I'm amazed at the footnote sized fonts in these books, if they used modern typesetting the tex...

Re: Basic Fantasy based on Pathfinder?

Haven't played Pathfinder or 3.x, but I am definitely interested, probably more because of the associated fan base love/hype. It does seem at first glance the polar extreme of a rules light system. Your comment on traps reminded me of something I read. The following quote is from "A Quick Prime...

Re: Why BFRPG?

A handful of people, myself included, plugged BFRPG over on ENWorld on a thread about "what is your favorite retro clone".
