Re: "The Pit" Adventure Contest

Blazeguard I like the Dreaded Warrens, lots of room for the GM to personalize. But, I couldn’t find a unifying theme. What ties it all together? What’s the story behind that level of the pit? And, you have two great entry points to introduce or explain a theme. Encounter area 2 has “a rotting journa...

Re: Initiative Dilemma?

Sure. I've stated the crux of the matter before, and will repeat here. The underlying problem is the ability of those who win initiative to “lock on” and “track down” to the caster’s number to disrupt a spell. It invites "gamey" behavior that shuts down casters since there's no need to "hit," but ra...

Re: Initiative Dilemma?

By your own admission, my theme as been initiative all along. I started with a case in point, and then the conversation developed, as they often do. But always returning to initiative, which is at the heart of the game. All the red herrings you keep throwing out just indicate that you're not seeing ...

Re: Initiative Dilemma?

To be fair, no one ever said “the game is broken.” I’d ask that readers not take criticism as condemnation. Scrutiny is normal and can be value added if viewed with some detachment. For example, we certainly have come to agreement on, “this particular line of the core rulebook could be made a bit mo...

Re: Initiative Dilemma?

We all know the rules can't define everything; that's why we like this game rather than one that tries to. That's why we're here and not in a D&D 2nd edition or GURPS forum. But, that's not what's at issue here. Rather, there is a need for some baseline clarity that does not expect all readers to ma...

Re: Initiative Dilemma?

The dilemma is that if the other guy wins initiative (or even just gets a tie) then the winner can prevent the caster from casting just by dropping to the caster's initiative number and "trying" to hit him. Yes, the Fighter vs. Magic User at point blank range example is excessive. But, if we change ...

Re: Initiative Dilemma?

Yes, the fighter has an incentive to hold off and try to spoil the wizard's spell... but the fighter also knows that (a) this guy is puny, and (b) he's got no armor. If you kill him NOW, he's not going to cast any spells anyway. And since you don't know until his number comes up whether he's going ...

Re: Initiative Dilemma?

But in the game the pros and cons are not hypothetical so the zigs and zags do matter. The fact that there are infinite situations where a caster can be shut down, and infinite situations where a caster can't be shut down, and infinite situations where it could go either way means that the rule isn...

Re: Initiative Dilemma?

As Rhialto and many others have said, this assumes every enemy is equally capable of attacking the caster. I find this unlikely, especially if the caster is purposely avoiding combat. This is why I said the zigs and zags of the combat are not a factor to consider. We can all dream up an infinite nu...
