Movement... is diagonal movement allowed? Using a square grid... I also don't really understand how turning works...

what do people use? Hex or squares?

So, combat... still confused here... If I am within 5 feet I can attack... (not counting range for missile attacks) I simply roll my d20 and add my attack Bonus (+1 for lvl 1) and add possible strength bonus. If that modified number equals or exceeds the AC of the monster I hit... Then I roll for da...

Ok.. I am kinda understanding.. So, the encounter phase is all tactical. Where do the monsters generally appear once we zoom into the 10x10 square grid? I assume that is totally up to me. Here is our party.... I decided that all the players would play young level one characters who meet along a wooded road (the main road to the only real village for miles) on the way to a village where they are all heading for different reasons but basically to find adventure and make a name for them...

More help for the NOOB

Ok, My son (14) wants to be the elf magic using fighter option. I think I got the understanding of it.. he gets all the pros of each class but can only level up once he hits 4500 EXP. I am a bit confused on spells. Once you level up do you automatically get to pick another spell (based on the chart)...

So for example, my wife, who wants to play a cleric cannot cast ANY spell until she levels up. Once she is a level two cleric she can cast any of the first level clerical spells... there are 8 of them.

Ok...

I read that a lvl 1 Cleric cannot cast spells while level 1... yet in part 3 of the rules it gives a list of first level cleric spells? I am lost...
