Re: And Now, For Something Completely Different...
This sounds utterly excellent. I would totally play this game.

Re: Battle mats
I've had a Chessex Mega-Mat since the late 80s, and it still works great. Does have a few weird stains on it from pen-marks left too long, but it doesn't bother me. I kind of like the reminder of past exploits! I've also got a couple sets of Role4Initiative's "Dungeon Tiles", which I like a lot: htt...

Re: Tips for a new BFRPG DM? Starting a campaign on Roll20.
The best GMing advice I've ever heard came from my son when he was 5 years old. He told me he wanted to be the GM in our game, and I told him that he should let me do it for a while until he'd played more. He told me that GMing was "easy, anyone can do it". "Oh, yeah?" says I, being all cynical and ...

Your dad is clearly awesome.
I got a copy of Dungeon! a couple years back, and played it with my own kids. That got them interested in my old copy of Talisman, which we've played a ton of, and now we're playing a BFRPG campaign set in Narnia.

Re: Character number recommendations on modules?
My games have five players, each controlling a single PC. They work as freelance troubleshooters/makers for the local government, and there's been a few times when I presented them with a huge opposition to face, so they requested backup. In those cases, I gave each player 3 hireling NPCs to control...

Re: Is basic fantasy really for me?
It seems to me that where you're hung up is that you were drawn to BFRPG because of the simplicity, but find yourself wanting more complexity. And obviously there's nothing wrong with that, but consider that a baseline for discussion. Personally, I came to BFRPG after many years of frustration with ...

Indeed, the core rules are so cheap, I've started adding copies with anything else I order from Amazon. I plan on giving them away as I can, probably going to seed a few into the numerous Little Free Libraries that have popped up in my area.

Re: Multiple questions.
There's no way the party could win! Even taking into account that they'll be fighting in a
1-tile wide tunnel, they would still have to hack through 15 goblins and 3 hobgoblins
One of the hallmarks of the BFRPG-style of "Old School Gaming" is an emphasis on player skill as well a...

Re: Multiple questions.
1 -- I'd say a freely unencumbered arm. So, if you're holding a shield in one arm, your fingers are being used to grasp one of the straps. WOn't work. 2 -- I don't know how that would really work. The types of lanterns we usually see in fantasy art are too big and bulky to wear around your neck. May...

Re: I'm new to BFRPG, I just ordered my hardcopies!
Welcome aboard! I've been running the game for my own kids (11 and 8), and they've been having a great time. My son actually got a bunch of the kids at his school into it, and they started a weekly club. With the low price, I went out and bought a bunch of extra copies for the club's library. They'r...
