Re: JN1 The Chaotic Caves

Just wanted to let J.D. Neal and everyone involved with this that I ran a solo game for myself using the abandoned halfling farm chapter. My party is not quite through clearing the place out yet. They'll move on to the Caves of Horror from that same chapter next. I just wanted to let folks know thei...

With a name like Zoltor, it has to be good. And it is. In fact, it's great and reminds me strongly of art from 1st edition.

Re: Any tips on running JN1 The Chaotic Caves?

Another option is to split the map. All the caves and lairs don't have to be in the same area. That way you can just drop them in wherever you like. That way you can tailor the adventure to their level. This also opens up the opportunity for more overland travel to get to the different lairs. And th...

Re: House Rules

Classic Top Secret had a Fame Point/Fortune Point rule. Each character received 1 point of Fame each time a level was gained, and in addition the game master (Administrator) rolled a number of Fortune points for each character but kept the total secret. Whenever a character was reduced to 0 hit poi...

Re: House Rules

I'm thinking of the following house death rule: At 0 hp, you make a CONSTITUTION check (roll under for old school) -SUCCESS: You are knocked out for the remainder of the fight (~10 minutes) -FAILURE: You must get immediate attention from another character to stabilize you. If they can't help you at ...

Re: Solo Actual Play

Solo is also a great way to try out a new scenario. It helps me know if I've made things too tough or too easy. Also, old school rulesets are MUCH easier to run solo. You can get through a lot of adventure since you aren't waiting on players to decide their next move. The flip side is that you don't...

Re: Setting DCs for saving throws

In terms of skills, you can have PC's roll at or under their appropriate attribute. So instead of an acrobatics skill, they just roll under their dexterity. One easy way to keep a lid on this is to have the DM decide who should make the roll. For example, wizards should make the Intelligence rolls t...
