Re: Mapping software for modules

Sorry the very delayed response. In Inkscape, I use a triangular grid, with hexes centered around the center of one vertex. Then I double the grid sizing and have object centers snap to points, so that keeps my hexes on the right points. This allows both horizontal and vertical hex arrangement.

Re: Mapping software for modules

I've actually found inkscape to work surprisingly well for hex maps. It's a vector editing program so everything looks crisp at all scales.

Re: blending BFRPG and 5e

In case anybody comes across this in the future, I would clearly point out that a character rolled up in 5e is almost certainly NOT going to work in virtually ANY OSR game, unless it's really, literally, just 3d6 six times. The hit points scale is way off. The spell abilities may be way off. They wo...

Re: Are humans really this bad? Looking for alternate bonuses.

I've had some of the same thoughts. In fact, in that linked thread people point out that a 20% XP bonus might have been better. Next time I run a campaign, that's what I'm going to do. Other incentives for humans might be judicious application of optional rules. Perhaps only humans can: * -1/+2 poin...

Thanks for the updates, and... sorry it's been the better part of a year since I said I'd work on this again. Whoops.

Re: 2 Questions

With these items is it fair to say that a thief can backstab with impunity assuming he doesn't fail his success rolls? These items seem quite powerful. I would still require an attack roll. One, this keeps the player guessing if they were actually successful. Two, unless an enemy is truly incapacit...

Re: Awarding XP for exploration

Instead of using the Gold = XP option, I've started giving the party 100 xp for exploring a new hex, and 50 xp per room in a dungeon, on top of the monster XP. Not bad. This gives a nice low-level bonus while not affecting higher level groups much, since the award does not scale to the character le...

Re: Magic-User Cantrips

I think it's important to provide a balance in the game. The Magic User is already very powerful. Even magic missile can be a game changer if used right. Even the armored fighter is going to need to rest and heal after a battle (at first level), so it's not so likely that the magic user will need to...

Re: Here we go, 1st session with Morgansfort...any advice?

Key thing, which you probably hit on, is that old school renaissance gaming keeps the idea of "rulings not rules" central. Don't sweat the details too much (you'll get used to them quickly, don't worry). Just keep the game going, and if you made a mistake, either ignore it for now (to keep...
