The wolves are about 30 feet due east of Doughbert in his tree, and about 40’ north-east of Hiker. You both have a clear shot at a wolf if you decide to make a missile attack.

Hiker watched as the deer flitted past, then he noticed the hesitant wolves...without hesitation Hiker sights the first arrow and fires at the lead wolf.

(DM, feel free to roll all rolls for me as it will keep game flowing)

Hiker will continue to unload on the wolves until they are dead or other action is required.

OOC: I love it!!(almost laughed out loud when I read it again) Hiker does not have the capacity to really be diverse in thought or action, so once his flip is switched on...besides, wolves have, unfortunately for them been associated with the taking of Miss Alma ... that's not just bad for these wolves, its bad for ALL wolves in Hiker's myopic thought pattern!

Doughbert throws his dagger at the nearesr wolf amd if it's safe to drop from his tree amd draw his sword he will. If not he will scurry down then draw. (I realize this will take more than a round just was letting you know for the flow. O f coirse if this seems like a bad strategy dependimg on what happens he would swap plans as needed)

Round 1

So, whilst the wolves are surprised, you begin your attacks.

Doughbert lets fly with his dagger. Wolf 1 is the nearest one to you, so I’ll assume you aim at him (or her). It’s 30’ away, so that’s just within long range. The wolf’s AC is 13. You roll a 6 (+3 Attack Bonus, -2 long range) = 7: a miss. The dagger sails over the top of the wolf’s head.

Hiker releases his arrow, also at Wolf 1 (the nearest). The wolf is currently 40’ away from Hiker, so that’s short range with his short bow. You roll a 9 (+2 Attack Bonus, +1 short range) = 12: a narrow miss. The arrow ruffles the fur of the unsuspecting wolf, but doesn’t break its skin.



Round 2

Initiative
Doughbert: 3 + 2 (dexterity) + 1 (halfling) = 6.
Hiker: 5 + 1 (dexterity) = 6.
Wolf 1: 6.
Wolf 2: 3.
Wolf 3: 2.

Doughbert jumps down from his tree, draws his shortsword and attacks the advancing Wolf 1, who simultaneously attempts to bite the halfling. You roll a 7 (+1 Attack Bonus) = 8: another miss from the halfling. The wolf doesn’t miss though, and Doughbert receives a savage bite to his arm (3 damage).

Hiker, also simultaneously, fires his second arrow at Wolf 1 (3 + 2 +1 = 6): yet again, a miss. [I’ll assume that as your shot took place at the same time as the wolf’s advance, there is no chance of accidentally hitting Doughbert].

Assessing Hiker as the major threat, Wolf 2 quickly makes up the intervening ground and lunges at the bowman with its gaping jaw. Hiker’s lack of armour costs him dear, as the wolf bites deep ( 4 damage).

Wolf 3 follows his comrade, although his attack is wide of the mark.

[Should I continue with the next round in the same way, or are you going to modify your strategy? If you continue to fight, I'm guessing Hiker will draw his warhammer?]

Hiker screams at the initial bite and drops his bow reflexively. Then, a bit shaken, he does indeed draw his War hammer. Hiker is now enraged and shaking as the adrenalin rush surges through his body momentarily alleviating the shot of pain. With sweat suddenly sprouting from his brow Hiker swings violently at the nearest wolf with intention to split it open like a summer melon.

[Well, let's do a quick calculation. It was stated that the main party would set off 20 minutes behind Doughbert and Hiker. The party's base movement rate now that you have Jumbles is 20', which according to the Wilderness Movement Rates equates to 6 miles per day (adjusted for forest), or 3/4 of a mile per hour. However, both groups are moving especially cautiously, so let's say your actually moving at half that rate. If I've got my sums correct, that puts you at something like 200 - 250 yards behind. Given that Hiker has just screamed as a result of the wolf bite he sustained, I'll say 'yes', you hear his shout]
