Turns vs Rounds, what's the difference?

Post by JakeCWolf »

I know I'm not the only one to ask this, has to be the first newbie question a lot of people ask and it's some that always confuses me greatly. I'm pretty sure that a turn means one players turn, while a round means every PC and creature having done something or skipping there turn so that whoever acted first now goes again and the round count goes up by one.

Do I have this correct? Also how many rounds/turns are in a minute? As that's the question that inventively follows this one.

Part 4: The adventure
One Turn = Adventuring Time = 10 minutes each.
One Round = Combat Time = 10 seconds each

In both Turns and Rounds every character acts using Initiative if needed.

1 Round = 10 seconds
6 Rounds = 60 seconds = 1 minute
60 Rounds = 600 seconds = 10 minutes
10 minutes = 1 Turn

1 Round = 6 seconds
10 Rounds = 60 seconds = 1 minute
60 Rounds = 10 minutes
10 minutes = 1 Turn
60 Rounds = 1 Turn
This is correct for BFRPG. In some older books, like Of Ships and the Sea, a turn was variable between 10 and 30 minutes depending on situation.

Almost correct. Your math is off.

1 round = 6 seconds.
10 rounds = 60 seconds = 1 minute
100 rounds=600 seconds = 10 minutes = 1 turn

Ah! I see the problem now. BFRPG page 36 says 1 round = 10 seconds, not 6 seconds.

1 round = 10 seconds
6 rounds = 60 seconds = 1 minute
60 rounds = 600 seconds = 10 minutes = 1 turn

Sorry for that, for some reason I wrote 6 seconds and went with it, I corrected my math

The idea behind turns and rounds is that one is a time-scale useful for combat or other forms of interpersonal interaction. The other is useful for exploring and such. Because the day/night cycle plays a significant role in the game, these two units are compromises between seconds (usually too short as a unit), minutes (too long for combat purposes, too short for exploration), and hours (too long for anything other than outdoor travel without incidents).

Turns are a tradition; I barely use them myself, actually.

Same here. I just pass the time when appropriate, for instance when spells or whatnot are in place. Only the short term "combat" phase really matters to me for most gameplay, the rest can be winged easily.
Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?
