I would totally take the Slavers way out. Your all slaves and you need to escape! You overpower the guard and have access to the storage room. Now you just need to find a way out of their stronghold...

Better yet, stick them on a ship. Even if you escape where are you going to go?

Roman slave barges had hundreds of slaves to only a couple handful of guards? If the boat was taken over then you could start out a waterborne adventure. Turn the characters into pirates and such.

I'm a fan of playing with tropes and expectations. You All Meet in a Dungeon.
You are awoken by a banging noise, as a guard rattles the cage door of your cell, and throws a sack of half-rotten food on the floor in front of you. Looking around, you see you are surrounded by other prisoners, some occasional allies, some one-time enemies, all brought beyond your lands, and thrown together to an unknown fate.

What do you do?
That's part of an campaign start I'm working on.

It's a fun concept, and helps you get through the first round with something playable. Clearly not a designed character approach, but it's a a fast way to throw a party together.

That or we need to cut back on The Walking Dead.
