New class submission Shadow Mage

Post by Numberlyric »

Hello everyone,

I'm submitting a character class, shadow mage, for the workshop to look at, review, and edit for errors. Feedback and artwork welcome.

Brief description: Shadow Mages are “specialist” Magic-Users whose shadow spells lie in between necromancy and illusions. They do not animate dead, but are well versed in walking in paths of the darkness and usually travel to realms only dreamed of by others. Shadow mages are common on the plane of Shadow, the Abyssal planes and in the Underdark (especially Drow wizards).

NOTE: I don't know the license-free term for Underdark (should it be under-world?). And I don't know if drow is allowed (should it be dark-elf?). It needs a lot of proofing, thank you for your time.

PS: added open source license.

Nice idea. I like the stuff with a little darker edge, so I could probably work with this.
Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?

I am not happy with two spells, shadow blades and Back Biter Shield.

Trying to find a simple mechanic that is true to the spell idea. The idea for shadow blades is a buffer for a group of warriors, but my mechanics are too complicated and require notekeeping (yuck). The Back biter shield is not as over-powered as it sounds, as it can easily be dispelled by dispel magic. Players should be intelligent enough to not attack the same way again after taking damage the first time. But it is difficult to explain to players what actually happened. It could be more entertaining if we said the attack re-emerges out of the shadow of a random person, but that doesn't solve the problem of simplifying the spell description.

Also, I want to add a commune spell, to commune with either a shadow lord or a lord of the abyss. sounds very appropriate as a 5th level spell.
